I am currently the Professor of Hepatology at The University of Southampton, Southampton, UK.

I have a long-standing interest in natural killer cells and the killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR). My research has focused on the the role of NK cells in viral infections especially hepatitis C and also their role in liver disease, including their therapeutic use in liver cancer. We have performed a number of immunogenetic studies of KIR in disease and are now engaged in studying the molecular mechanisms that govern KIR recognition of HLA class I, especially their modulation by bound peptide.
